Work started Monday to improve a rough section of Interstate 55 that runs through south Jackson.
Crews began milling uneven spots in the roadway between the McDowell Road and Byram exits.
Workers tackled the southbound right lane and outside shoulder first. Once they finished with the nearly 7 mile stretch, they switched to the other side of the interstate and worked on the northbound right lane and shoulder.
Next spring, the Miss. Department of Transportation will begin work on a brand new interstate in that area, which will add a lane on each side, running from Interstate 20 down to Terry.
