Edwards ends fight to keep his job

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Public Schools Superintendent is calling it quits and ending his battle to continue leading the state's largest school system.

Doctor Lonnie Edwards made the announcement this afternoon in the superintendent's conference room of the administrative office. The move comes one day before his contract expired.

In January, the school board voted not to renew his contract. Edwards appealed the decision.

Monday trustees voted to appoint former JPS superintendent Doctor Jayne Sargent interim superintendent. Edwards says that vote did not prompt his announcement.

He says he wants little distractions for the district and the children.

"This evening I acknowledge that I move on and I'm very proud to have had this contract" said Edwards. "Being a native of the state of Mississippi, I am very proud."

Edwards stressed that he was thankful to work with the school board and people of Jackson. He plans to return to Georgia.
