The process of selecting the 54th young woman to hold the title of Miss Mississippi is underway in Vicksburg.

The Miss Mississippi contestants have been split into 3 groups.

They will compete with their group throughout the preliminary process that begins Wednesday night at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

Preliminary competition continues through Friday.

Technically, the pageant began Monday with the first group of contestants in the judges interviews.

The final judges interviews were held Wednesday.

"My favorite part of competition is interview, because you can't fake it, you can't put on makeup to have a good interview, you can't go to the gym to have a good interview that's where you get to show your heart to the judges," said Mary Margaret Roark, Miss North Central Mississippi.

"I've never won a preliminary so I'm hoping that maybe I can change that this year," said Kristen Benigno, Miss Hattiesburg. "Really one of the things that I've tried to focus on is that preliminaries are the small picture, so what I'm looking for is the big picture, just being consistent and doing my best in every area of competition."

This is Benigno's 5th year to compete.

The new Miss Mississippi will be crowned Saturday night at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

The pageant will air on WLBT beginning at 8:00pm.
