Miss Mississippi - Thursday Preliminaries

In nearly 24 hours the Magnolia state will crown its new Miss Mississippi. In the meantime, the pageant contestants are competing in preliminary competitions.

Thursday night, a packed crowd gathered for the second round of the talent and swimsuit contests. Jackson's very own Miss Metro Jackson, Chelsea Rick, won Thursday's swim wear competition.

Rick attends Millsaps College. She says she worked diligently to get fit and healthy to prep for the swim wear contest.

Marie Wicks was Thursday's other winner. Wicks is Miss Pine Belt. Wicks won Thursday's talent competition with her piano skills.

Both Wicks and Rick say they're extremely passionate about their talents and the pageant.

"The piano means the world to me," Wicks said. "I just love playing the piano. It reminds me of my grandfather. He just passed away this last year. He always loved to listen to me play the piano."

"It is an absolutely amazing experience that is intangible," says Rick. "It can provide you with opportunities to enhance your public speaking skills, to be able to cultivate your talent and your ability to try to motivate you."

The final round of preliminary competition wraps up Friday night. Miss Mississippi receives her crown on Saturday. You can watch the pageant live on WLBT.
