4H horse championships wrap up at the state fairgrounds

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Kids of all ages showed off what it takes to train a champion horse during this year's 4H horse show.

The 2011 Mississippi 4H Horse Championships wrapped up Saturday at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center on the state fair grounds.

It was the fifth day of the horse show, which included speed events like barrel racing, pole bending and the stake race.

More than 1,200 youngsters participated in the event with more than 600 horses.

Organizers said the children in the 4H program find they enjoy training the horses and along the way they learn responsibility and how to bond with the animals.

"It's not always easy to get up and go take care of your horse when the weather's bad or when it's cold outside or it's hot outside, but to me these kids deserve all the credit for putting in the hard work and the hard effort training the horses, working with them to make them the best they can," said State 4H Horse Show manager Dr. Dean Jousan.

Mississippi will host the 4H Southern Regionals in Tunica July 26th - 31st.

Children from 13 states will be participating.
