Sheriff ditches forum

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Candidates for statewide and local offices were invited to a political forum at New Horizon Church on Ellis Avenue Tuesday evening. But one candidate for Hinds County Sheriff took issue with how the forum was conducted and abruptly left.

Three On Your Side obtained video from supporters of Tyrone Lewis at the forum.

Sheriff Malcolm McMillin, apparently upset he was called to speak first, rather than alphabetically, said to moderator Othor Cain, "I choose not to." McMillin cited a letter he received saying candidates would speak in alphabetical order. That would have meant McMillin gets to speak last.

The head of the political and legal guild of New Horizon said she wasn't aware of that in the letter but agreed to abide by it anyway drawing groans from the audience.

The sheriff stood up and left the church without addressing the forum, stunning some of those in attendance.
