New Choctaw Chief ready to start work

Posted: Updated:

Phyllis Anderson, the first female chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, will be sworn in Tuesday morning, at the Tribal Council meeting.

Anderson, who defeated Chief Beasley Denson by more than 300 votes, says her top priority is to let people know what is going on.

Fifty-year-old Anderson lives on the Red Water Reservation, near Carthage, and has served two terms on the tribal council. Her mentor was former chief Phillip Martin.

Anderson says she has no plans to close anything that makes money, adding that they have to cut more expenses and get more players into the casinos.

She says she was elected because the people wanted change.
