Miss Mississippi - Alzheimer's Prevention

She is a 20-year-old, from Cleveland who graduated Valedictorian of her high school class. Miss Mississippi 2011,  Mary Margaret Roark says academics have always been important to her. The Mississippi State junior is on the President's list.

She now prepares to represent this state at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas in January. Roark says she is spending time speaking to groups across the state about her platform on Alzheimer's. Her grandmother suffers with alzheimers and she is hoping to educate the public on the impact of the disease on the entire family.

"I'm just really excited to be able to further my efforts and help with the Alzheimer's Association walks, help with Respite Centers, and help raising money and awareness for them. And I think that my platform could not come at a better time because the baby boomer generation is about to be just bombarded by this disease and its going to become a real epidemic if we don't do something about it. So I think that my platform is really timely right now", said Roark.

The Miss America Pageant is scheduled for January 14, 2012. Roark completed the official paperwork for the national competition Monday morning in Vicksburg. She is hoping to become the 5th young woman from Mississippi to win the Miss America crown.
