Heat Advisory, Dangerous UV Index & Storms Today!

We have several heat and sun related concerns for today, and in the mix we'll watch out for fast forming isolated storms in the afternoon hours. Yesterday's storms caused wind damage 3 miles SSW of Brandon, 2 miles SW of Hazlehurst and 3 miles NE of Hattiesburg. Today's storms are expected to have the same punch.

The Heat Advisory is in effect for our entire viewing area for today. Anticipate highs to reach near 97 degrees with the heat index reaching to 110 in some areas; particularly north Mississippi. Yesterday we reached 100 degrees for the high, falling 4 degrees shy of the record high set in 1930. Today's record high in 106.

Another concern will be the extremities of the Ultra violet index levels in Mississippi. Today's UV index will be at a level of 12. For reference's sake, when we reach 11 we are in the "extreme" category. This means beach goers run the risk of DOUBLE exposure to the sun, causing cancerous burns in the skin if it's unprotected. Wearing sunscreen, hats & shirt is a 'must' in this extreme exposure.

Tomorrow's forecast includes highs reaching 96 degrees, possibly keeping us under a heat advisory for Wednesday. Our chances of storms goes up to 50%, and some of them may become severe. This is due to the abundance of solar energy available to feed fast forming storms.
