PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A search is underway for the man who opened fire on a Rankin County woman at her apartment Tuesday night.

Pearl police said the two argued.

She is now in the hospital, and he is on the run.

Tiffany Bracey is in University Medical Center after police said she was shot at her Rankin Square Apartment in Pearl just before 11 o'clock Tuesday night.

The 22 year old's grandmother said she was hit twice.

"She has been in surgery for seven hours," said Bracey's grandmother Faye Parker. "They got the artery in her left leg, and she took another bullet in the right leg."

Pearl Police said Bracey was standing on the balcony of Apartment 62 when she was struck.

Witnesses told police she argued with apartment maintenance worker Bill Kenneth Sanders before gunfire erupted.

"The victim threw some sort of metal chair off the balcony of her apartment striking the maintenance man and witnesses say put a pretty good gash on his head," said Pearl Police Lt. Butch Townsend.

According to investigators, Sanders, 31, left and returned with a gun.

Sanders then fired several shots as she stood outside her apartment.

"He was seeking retribution it appears," Lt. Townsend said.

Sanders is now wanted for aggravated assault.

Parker said she does not know what happened but was told by her granddaughter that Sanders shot into the windshield of her van Sunday while she was at work.

Investigators said Bracey is familiar with Pearl Police, although she does not have any recent convictions.

Lt. Townsend said if Sanders had pressed charges against Bracey instead of taking matters into his own hands she would be the one facing charges.

Pearl Police are working with Jackson Police in the search for the maintenance worker.

Rankin Square Apartment management declined to comment.

Meanwhile, Parker said the shooting may have affected her granddaughter permanently.

A bullet struck the femoral artery in her left leg.

"The doctor told me just a little bit ago they didn't know how this is going to affect her walking," Parker said.

Bill Sanders is believed to be in the Pearl or Jackson area.

Sanders is African American, 6'1" and weighs 140 pounds.
