Officer involved shooting in Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police respond to the scene of a Wednesday night officer involved shooting on Hair Street near Cleveland Avenue.

Officer Colendula Green says it happened around 8:50 Wednesday evening.

An hour before the incident, a resident reported the theft of his 2002 Ford Explorer.

An officer driving in the area was flagged down by the car theft victim and told that the stolen vehicle was seen traveling north on Hair Street.

The officer located the Ford Explorer at a residence on Hair Street and spotted the suspect getting out of the SUV.

That's when police say the alleged car thief walked back toward the vehicle but was stopped by the officer.

Green says the suspect was being handcuffed when he reportedly broke free, ran north, turned around, then fired one shot.

Investigators say the officer fired back and hitting the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was transported to UMC.

The officer's name has not been released.

The officer is on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
