NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The Natchez Malt Shop sustained heavy damage Thursday night, when a man fleeing police ran into the front of it.
Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins says a patrol officer saw a car driving on the wrong side of the street around 11:25. When the officer tried to flag the car down, the driver fled.
Chief Mullins says the officer pursued him, and a short time later, the car crashed into the Natchez Malt Shop. The driver tried to run, but police caught him.
Twenty-year-old Dwight Anthony Berry, Jr., of Natchez, is charged with Felony Fleeing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and running a red light. He also had a suspended license.
Berry is being held in the Adams County jail.
The Malt Shop has been a downtown Natchez fixture for more than 50 years. No word on how badly the building is damaged.
