Lewis gets endorsements from former head of NAACP

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The former head of the state NAACP returned to Jackson Friday to endorse Tyrone Lewis for Hinds County Sheriff.

Pastor Emmett Burns Jr. is now a member of the Maryland House of delegates. He joined more than a dozen fellow pastors for the endorsement. During the event we asked Lewis about a wrongful death suit several years ago regarding the murder of Crystal Coleman. Her body was found inside her car at the Rebelwood Apartments.

The ruling originally came down in favor of the plaintiff. But the state supreme court reversed it, in part because of Lewis' claims as an expert witness.

The high court called Lewis' testimony untrue.

"If a judge says you can't talk about this, you can't talk about it. I was limited to things I could talk about in the Rebelwood case," Lewis explained.

Lewis is running against incumbent Sheriff Malcolm McMillin.
