Neshoba County Fair kicks off Friday

NESHOBA COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi's Giant House Party gets underway Friday, for it's eight day run. The Neshoba County Fair, which started in 1889, is unlike any other rural fair in the country.Thousands gather each year, to listen to political speeches, and renew old friendships.

It is on a site some six miles south west of Philadelphia in rural Neshoba County.

Many families spend their vacation there and it is a tradition going back several generations. People own the 600 cabins year round, but rarely use them except during the fair.

There will be a total of 81 political candidates speaking this year.

Seventy-five year old Gilbert Donald, who is retired from Weyerhauser but still in the lumber business, tried to explain what the secret of the fair is.

"This is the one time that the whole family can get together and enjoy each other for a few days, maybe not the whole fair, but part of the fair" said Donald. "And the friendship, I think, that the people in these cabins, show to just strangers, makes other people want to come back here."

We have found some unusual things about the fair over the years, but for the first time we found somebody who had it made part of her wedding vows that her husband has to bring here back here every year from Indianapolis and so far he had done that since 2005.

She is 30 year old Grayson Mars Miller, who has attended the fair every year of her life.

"My husband knows he is expected to bring me back every year to the fair regardless of what was going on" said Miller. "We haven't missed a fair since we have been married."

The fair started out in 1889 as a one day event and has grown to eight days. If you plan to be elected to state wide office in Mississippi you pretty much have to make a speech in the pavilion on Founder's Square.
