JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A nationally renown Democrat and political strategist fired up the ranks Saturday night during the Jefferson-Jackson Hamer dinner.

James Carville was the key note speaker at the Mississippi Democratic Party's 31st annual fundraiser.

Hundreds filled the Jackson Convention Complex to hear the Louisiana native's humorous and inspiring words to the party.

Democratic Gubernatorial Candidates Johnny Dupree and Bill Luckett also attended. The dinner was a chance for party members to meet candidates and office holders.

The 66-year-old CNN Political Contributor urged Mississippians to hold Republicans responsible for the deficit, wars and tax structure that he says benefits the wealthy.

"I am very proud of the candidates we're going to field here in Mississippi come this election year between now and election day don't apologize. Don't be down. Take it to them. Take it to them, hold them accountable for the things that they have done," Carville said.

House Speaker Billy McCoy, who is retiring this year, was also honored during the dinner.
