JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The back to school season is beginning and one group is hoping to ease the financial burden of buying back to school supplies for hundreds of Jackson families.

The Junior League of Jackson's "Backpack Buddies Project" kicked-off at Raines Elementary Tuesday morning.

100 students received free bookbags filled with supplies, such as notebooks, papers and markers.

School administrators selected students based on who is in the most critical financial need.

In all, 600 Jackson Public School elementary students at six separate schools received free bookbags.

Julie Jackson, the provisional chair for JLJ elaborated on why it is so important to help these children.

"A lot of us take for granted that we can go to Wal-mart and buy the things that we need," Jackson said. "We're hopeful that we can help them alleviate those worries."

This is one of 30 community projects conducted by Junior League of Jackson.

Backpack Buddies has a budget of $12,000 and $2,000 was spent at each school.

In addition to Raines Elementary, students at Bradley, Lake, Clausell, French and Pecan Park elementary schools are benefiting from the project.
