JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Nearly 1,600 young people were competing in the National Barrel Horse Youth World Championships at the Mississippi Fairgrounds.

They come from four countries and 36 states to give it their all during the week long competition at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center.

Children as young as four and youth up to 19 years old were taking part in the event.  One of the stand out riders came from Marion, Louisiana.  Gage Davis is only six years old and has been riding horses his entire life.

Only 150 horses qualify for the final competition and three of those are mastered by Davis.  We asked him what was the trick to barrel horse racing?

"It normally isn't probably a trick. You just go out there and have fun," said Davis.

He also said he's pretty fast.

Davis can be watched in the final competition Saturday.  Admission can be purchased at the gate.   The week long event brings in $3.4 million to the Jackson area.
