RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Shoppers took advantage of big savings over the weekend. The state's 7% sales tax was waived on specific items like clothing and footwear. Each item had to cost less $100 to qualify for the savings.
To entice shoppers into their stores, retailers made their own price reductions giving customers deeper discounts and retailers a boost.
"It has been very good for retailers. I think it did help us start back to school in a very positive manner and then it will catapult us into the holiday season which is just around the corner," said Northpark Mall General Manager Susan Sgrignoli.
She said retailers reported higher returns in this sales tax holiday compared to last year.
