New Heat Warnings In Effect: And EMILY In Play

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The new twist in our forecast is that a Heat WARNING is now in effect for central Mississippi; so indexes are likely to soar above 110 today. Hinds, Rankin, Madison & Warren counties have been added to the list of updated areas now under a warning. Along with those areas, the folks in Yazoo, Holmes & Attala have also been upgraded to Heat Warnings.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for south Mississippi, where heat indices of 105-110 are possible. Fortunately we have winds from the north west; so it could actually be worst. The Advisory is in effect for all other counties in our viewing area.

High temperatures each afternoon this week will be around 100-102. Very muggy air will continue over us, making for dangerous heat index values. There will be little relief at night as lows remain in the upper 70s and heat indices in the 80s during the nighttime hours.

Rain chances are very small and confined to south Mississippi.

The heat will begin to let up by the weekend, even then highs will still be in the middle to upper 90s. There is also a slight chance for isolated storms across the region this weekend. But that's being hopeful at best and may change by the time we get to the weekend.

In the Atlantic, we now have our eye on "EMILY" - a newly formed tropical storm.  Emily continues moving westward with little change in strength. As of this morning Emily was located at 15.5N  64.0W about 245 miles  south est of San Juan Puerto Rico.

Maximum sustained winds of Emily are at 40 mph as of this morning. And Emily is moving steadily to the west at 16 mph and expected to curve and hit the eastern coastal region of Florida; that according to the latest models.
