JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Tyrone Lewis claimed victory Tuesday night, confident that he has unseated Hinds County four term Sheriff Malcolm McMillin.

Supporters chanted the 51 year old's name as he entered celebrations at Primos Northgate Ballroom.

Word spread at the celebration site that there was a new sheriff in town, as Lewis led with more than 50 percent of the vote throughout much of Tuesday evening.

This was his second time challenging McMillin for the post.

At the podium Lewis told the crowd that he was at a loss for words but said the journey to the victory began four years ago.

The 28 year law enforcement veteran said voters wanted change because they don't feel safe, the tax base is high and businesses are leaving.

"With the crime rate that it is around Jackson, the capital city, people just wanted to feel safe. They did not see a good presence from the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, and my promise was to make sure that happens," Lewis said.

The Jackson native said he believes there will be a smooth transition when he takes over as sheriff.

He plans to meet with his campaign staff and legal team Wednesday.
