South Jackson church vandalized

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police are investigating the vandalism of a south Jackson church.

Church members called 3 On Your Side after the entire front porch came crashing down, leaving the congregation without a place to worship.

Beacon Hill Baptist Church is on Hickory Drive in south Jackson.

People have been coming to this small place of worship tucked away in a neighborhood for some 50 years.

That all changed overnight.

Ray Brown lives across the street, he said he didn't hear a thing.

"We don't have any trouble at all other than this," Brown said. "This is the worst I've seen lately.

Sometime early Tuesday morning witnesses report youngsters in front of Beacon Hill Baptist Church, reportedly kicking at the concrete pillars holding up the portico.

"A church for goodness sakes what good does it do them?"

That's when the structure collapsed blocking the entrance. Neighbors were stunned when we showed them the damage.

"They don't care when they want something they get it."

Pastor Robert Wilson has called this church home for 7 years.

Now he's left in dismay over the destructions.

"What is the reaction of your congregation?"

"Disbelief," Wilson said. "We always think it happens to somebody else. Well this time we were the somebody else."

While vandalism at his church is shocking, his congregation is forgiving.

"God will take care of it. We are small in number but big in spirit," Wilson said.

"So you will move on from this?"

"Oh yeah," Wilson said. "It's not going to shut down."

With the front entrance to Beacon Hill Baptist Church impassable, the congregation will gather in the fellowship hall down the road until the damage is repaired.

In the meantime they hope police can track down the culprits.

If anyone has information about who may have damaged the church, call Jackson Police at 601-960-1234 or Crimestoppers at 601-355-8477.
