Man with weapons surrenders without incident

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A tense standoff in a Jackson neighborhood ended peacefully after four hours Thursday.

Heavy manpower, including SWAT teams and hostage negotiators, converged near 1624 Westbrook Road, across from McLeod Elementary School in northeast Jackson.

Around 8:30 Thursday morning, a woman called 911 saying her husband wouldn't let her and their 30-year-old-son back in the house. The man was also threatening to harm himself.

Tactical forces were called in when police learned the man had his own arsenal of weapons inside.

In rapid succession, SWAT team members arrived suited up and ready with their weapons.

Using McLeod Elementary School across the street as a command post, the police attempted to make contact with the man holed up inside the home of 1624 Westbrook Road.

Assistant Chief Lee Vance said, "We had an individual who had been described to us as a medical patient who had been taking medication all morning and drinking, also we were told he had a house full of weapons."

WLBT was informed the man hurt himself by cutting an "x" into his abdomen.

Westbrook Road had to be closed off for about four hours.

One resident said he had to take a back road to get to his house. And even then, he was not able to park in his driveway.

As minutes stretched into hours, the 53-year-old man refused to answer officers' repeated calls to the house.

Assistant Chief Vance said, "Chief Horton and his SWAT team put a camera robot inside where we can actually see what he was doing. Once that happened, he responded to the calls."

After taking a shower, the man walked out of the house surrendering around 1 PM.

Neighbors were relieved.

Jhaidi Haido had come to visit her brother for lunch. She said, "It's crazy. You're thankful the kids weren't here in school. That would have really scared them."

Classes have not yet resumed at McLeod Elementary. Teachers there preparing the building for the upcoming school year accommodated the SWAT members staged inside.

Heavily armed officers resolved the conflict without incident.
