JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson man has died after exchanging gunfire with a J.P.D. Officer.

That patrolman is recovering from his injuries.

Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said police were called to the 200 block of Delmar Street just before 11 Saturday night.

A Precinct Four officer reported seeing a man with a gun and called for backup.

Green has identified the man as Irwin Rand of Jackson, a convicted felon out of Hinds County.

Investigators said, Rand, 32 years old, shot the officer once in the thigh while grazing him in the other leg.

The unidentified officer struck Rand twice in the torso.

He died Sunday morning at University Medical Center.

The unnamed officer is listed in stable condition.

He will be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
