FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A couple accused of leaving their infant in a hot car while shopping at Walmart will go before a judge this week.  Their initial appearance is scheduled for Thursday morning in Flowood Municipal Court.

The baby's father, 36-year-old Thomas Morris of Texas, was charged with felony child neglect. The mother, 28-year-old Theresa Sheppard, was charged with felony child neglect as well as disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

According to Flowood Police the couple's seven month old child was left in a black Chevy Tahoe in the Walmart parking lot on Lakeland Drive just before 2:00 p.m. Saturday.  Tammy Mathis and her daughter were about to go inside the store when they heard the infant crying.  When Mathis realized the doors were locked and the car was off she called police.

"Before I got out of my car I noticed the temperature in my car said 104 degrees. So it was really hot and my daughter and I sat in the car probably 30 seconds before we ever got out of the car with the car off.  We couldn't stand that and later found out this baby had been in the car maybe 13 minutes or so.  I don't know how he tolerated that," said Mathis.

The father and mother are being held at the Rankin County jail.  The infant was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
