FLOWOOD, MS (WLBT) - The Northwest Rankin Cougars are coming off an 11-2 season but will be under the leadership of new head coach Pete Hurt in 2011.

Hurt joins the Cougar staff from Center Hill High School.

He takes over a team full of talent and numbers.

It's also a team that knows how to win big games.

NWR pulled off wins over Pearl and Madison Central in the regular season.

Coach Hurt says the mission right now is to continue to get better.

"We are just trying to focus on what we can control and that's getting better each day and trying to learn our offensive system, defensive system and the only thin we can control is our effort and attitude everyday," said Hurt.

"We weren't expected to do any good last year, but we ended up coming out 11-2 and we were expected to do really good this year. I think we are going to be twice as good as we were last year," said senior offensive lineman Colby Hegwood.

NWR opens its season against Callaway on August 19th.
