Luckett campaigns before run-off, critical of Lt. Gov. Bryant

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Voters are anticipating the run-off election for the Democratic nomination in the governor's race.

Bill Luckett was back on the campaign trail Tuesday morning addressing the media at the State Capitol.

The Clarksdale lawyer is primed for an August 23 run-off against Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny Dupree.

Neither candidate secured the nomination August 2.

Dupree received 44 percent of the vote to Luckett's 39 percent.

Despite his duel with Dupree, Luckett has his cross-hairs fixed on Republican nominee Phil Bryant.

"I'm not a career politician," Luckett said. "This is my first run for office. I'm focusing on Phil Bryant, because he's the guy I want to keep out of that capitol. The fear of having him become our governor is what prompted me to get into this race to start with."

Bryant secured the Republican nomination by winning 59 percent of the vote and fending off four challengers.
