Pearl Pirates looking for a better 2011

PEARL, MS (WLBT) - The goal for the 2011 Pearl Pirates-- to exceed last season's success.

The team finished 8-4 before bowing out to Oxford in the first round of the 5A playoffs.

The Pirates did lose one of their top offensive weapons from a year ago in Devante Nichols but he will be replaced at quarterback by MRA transfer Stewart Summers.

The defense returns four starters and seems very athletic but it's the leadership that makes Pearl special.

"We've got a great group of seniors. This is going on my fourth year and this is the best group of seniors we have had since we've been here. We've got 20 and they provide great leadership. They're playing really hard. We've got to get them practicing a little bit harder but on top of that, probably the best thing right now is we do have pretty good leadership and they are playing pretty hard," said head coach John Perry

"This is our year. This is the best team we've had in a long time and this is our time this year. We're just getting excited to play," said senior linebacker Matt Clark.

The Pirates open the season at Warren Central August 19th.
