JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson residents are getting tips on how to go green this week.

The city kicked off their city-wide energy efficiency program Wednesday at the Mississippi Arts Center.

Residents are being given kits that have energy saving light bulbs and information on what they can do in their home to reduce their utility bills.

Residents are also receiving resources on how to lower carbon emissions, to reduce their carbon imprint on the environment.

The program is made possible through a $1.17 million grant from the stimulus program.

"It's going to allow participants to gain invaluable info and resources that will show them how to reduce their utility cost and dramatically decrease carbon emissions this not only helps with households bottom line but it goes a long way in helping our environment as well," said Mayor Harvey Johnson.

Low income residents can also apply for vouchers worth up to $700 to buy new energy efficient air conditioners, refrigerators and water heaters.

The program runs Thursday at the Mississippi Arts Center from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
