Home repair fraud workshop

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

What can homeowners do to guard against fraud when making repairs and improvements?

Representatives with the National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud were in the Capital City with answers.

The workshop took place Wednesday evening and could change the lives of recent flood victims and others who are trying to rebuild.

The city of Jackson hosted the session at the atrium of the MS Art Center downtown on how to protect yourself from home improvement and repair fraud.

This past fiscal year the state attorney general's office investigated over 250 cases of home repair fraud.

The event was designed to educate homeowners on how to be their own quality control managers while their homes are undergoing repairs or improvements.

Executive Director Phae Howard with NCPHIF said, "We talk about conflict resolution. What should be in a contract. We talk about building permits. We go through the whole gambit from start to finish. We cover everything that you need to know before you begin the project, during your project and even after."

The 2-hour workshop was free to the public.
