Free, furnished house for Canton family

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Krista, who the Krista Cottage is named after, helps cut the ribbon for the 29th Krista Cottage, this one in Canton.

Words can't describe the surprise waiting for family members and friends inside: a fully furnished four-bedroom, two-bathroom house, free for Tony and Angela Bennett and their six children.

"I was really touched. I know my family is happy, especially the other two, who haven't seen it yet," Tony says.

Krista Cottages are just one of the ongoing projects of a group called MadCAAP, or Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty. "We don't charge for the house. We're very selective about the people we choose for it. But we want to give them a chance to get ahead in life," says MadCAAP Housing Manager John Robison.

It's a huge step up from the house the Bennetts were living in before, on the same property. MadCAAP tore down the old, 600 square foot house three months ago, and built the new, 1,248 square foot home in two months. The materials and furnishings were supplied by private donors.

Tony Bennett holds down two jobs, but he's also been a MadCAAP volunteer for years. "I do a lot for them. They see me helping other people, they say you need the help," he says.

The house is beyond the family's dreams. "I like it, I love it, I thank MadCAAP for building our house back over," says daughter Lakim Bennett.

MadCAAP will be holding an event called "Food for Thought" on October 4 at Plantation Commons in Gluckstadt. The event will kick off a capital campaign to build a new MadCAAP facility in Canton, to better serve the community.
