JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The smoke pouring through the building at the Lakeview Apartments was too thick for anyone to endure.

"We had this guy climb up the meters, we helped him up with our hands," says witness Darius Morton. "He was trying to see if he could get any kids out, but the smoke got his lungs, we pulled him out."

The power of the fire even proved insurmountable for firefighters trying to rescue the those left inside the upstairs apartment. "If they could have been here shorter time, I think they maybe could have lived or whatever," Morton says.

In the end, the fire claimed the lives of 28-year-old Dominique Henderson, and her four children, 7-year-old Akyerria, 5-year-old Bryceston, 3-year-old Cylor, and 2-year-old Ethan.

The children were cousins of Jazmyne Simmons. She lives in the apartment building next door. "When I got up my momma was hollering, call the fire department, call the fire department," Jazmyne says. "I went to grab my phone, all I could think about was they was gone."

The children's grandmother came just after 1 a.m. "When we made the entrance here, turned in, I just had this feeling," Linda Simmons says. "They say don't question God, but I keep asking why? Why did he take my 28-year-old daughter and her four lovely, lovely kids?"

Akerria attended Watkins Elementary School. The other children were not yet school age.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
