Deadly apartment fire started in the kitchen

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Fire officials have confirmed the apartment fire that killed a family of five originated in the kitchen.  Fire Investigator Gregory Travis said the cause of the blaze was under investigation Sunday.

Just before 1:00 a.m. Saturday firefighters arrived at the Lakeview Apartments in the 2300 block of Forest Avenue. This apartment unit was fully engulfed when emergency crews arrived.  Most families got out and some had to jump out windows.

Witnesses said a man attempted to climb up the meter boxes to save a mother and her four young children,  but the smoke proved too much for him.  Twenty-eight year old Dominique Henderson died in the fire along with two year-old Ethan and seven-year old Akerria, five-year old Bryceston and three-year old Cylor.

"They say they were outside trying to throw stuff. They are sound sleepers. She is and her kids are very sound sleepers.  People say the girl next door jumped out of the window and threw her kids down to people," said Henderson's grandmother Linda Simmons.

Eight families were displaced due to that fire. The American Red Cross has stepped in to help six of them with hotel rooms food and clothing.
