Cause of deadly Lakeview Apartment fire remains unclear

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Families were sifting through ash covered belongings Monday in the charred remains of apartment building K at the Lakeview Apartments on Forest Avenue.

A few pieces of clothing were all they find.

Fire investigators were trying to figure out what sparked the blaze that killed a mother and four children.

"We went through some of the debris, just combing through debris," said Jackson Chief Fire Investigator Greg Travis. "At this time we know that the fire originated in the kitchen of this particular apartment."

The blaze broke out around 12:45 a.m. Saturday.

Eight families lived inside the burning building.

Some had to jump out of windows to get to safety.

"We helped him up with our hands," said witness Darius Marton "We pushed him up.  He went inside and he was trying to see if he could get any kids out."

Despite neighbors efforts to save them, Dominique Henderson, 28, and her four children were killed in the fire.

"They say don't question God, but I keep asking myself why? Why did he have to take my 28 year old daughter and those four lovely lovely kids," said Henderson's mother Linda Simmons.

The oldest child, seven year old Akerria, had just started second grade at Watkins Elementary Friday.

Monday was a solemn day back to school for her fellow students and new teacher.

"There's a void," said 2nd grade teacher Roberta Walker. "You hate to lose a child turn to here there and lose them that soon.  There's a void."

Peeple's Funeral Home on Farish Street is handling the memorial arrangements.

The family needs financial help to pay for the services.
