Taking Back Our Neighborhoods - Revere Street eyesore

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A south Jackson resident has seen a steady decline in some of the property near her home.

Particularly, the abandoned house across from hers on 3134 Revere Street.

She called 3 On Your Side for help in taking back her neighborhood.

"We need somebody to take responsibility and come clean it up or preferably raze it to the ground," said Leigh Reeves.

She's talking about the property across the street from the house she lives in on Revere Street in south Jackson.

Reeves says it's been two years since anyone lived here and no one has taken care of the property since then.

Now, it's affecting the neighborhood.

"It was a real nice neighborhood," Reeves said. "It's just totally gone down."

"We had a lot of gunfire over here, like it's an everyday and every night occurrence..."

"...so that's not good and I think probably drug users are hanging out in there and kids are running around in broken glass over there," Reeves said.

Reeves had not been inside the house until we came and she was shocked over what she saw.

"I just think it's disgusting and I can't believe that the bank; this is an investment for them; why, what good is this doing anybody," Reeves said.

Asked if she had called the Mayor's Action Line or the Community Improvement Division, Reeves replied that she had not, but she said she would.

In fact, Reeves did contact the Mayor's Action Line after our visit and she was given a request ID number for removal of trash and debris from the neglected property on 3134 Revere Street in south Jackson.

A code enforcement officer inspected the property Monday morning and city spokesperson, Quita Bride, says the next step is to set a hearing date for the property owner.

We will keep you posted.
