Sound Off: Voter Discontent

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Marla Nottingham is fed up.

She wants to be able to vote for the person, not a party.

Nottingham has begun circulating a petition in hopes of getting enough signatures for voters to choose between open and closed primaries.

Apparently she is not alone.

In a recent web poll on WLBT 92% of those responded favored the open primaries.

I believe that voters are so frustrated with both parties on the national and local levels they no longer want to be restricted to one party or the other.

Former Governor Bill Waller has also come out in favor of open primaries and even went one step further by suggesting moving Election Day from Tuesdays to Saturdays.

There is probably not enough time to get these issues on the November ballot this year, but with voter discontent so high there is a good chance we may soon be voting on open primaries and maybe even voting on Saturdays.
