JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Charges have been upgraded in the death of a man the Hinds County District Attorney has labeled a hate crime.
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Schuler Smith says 19-year-old Deryl Dedmon is now charged with capital murder.
Smith says new evidence just discovered will show that Dedmon also robbed 49-year-old James Anderson.
The case has gained national attention after video was released showing Anderson being run over by a truck at the Metro Inn parking lot.
Smith says Dedmon intentionally set out to harm a black person the morning Anderson was killed.
A second teen, John Rice, 18, has been charged with simple assault in the case.
