JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jim Hill High School's "Meet the Tigers" event started like any other pep rally Thursday evening.  It included cheerleaders, athletes and a marching band.  Then, all was quiet as candles were lit in memory of Tommy Wheaton, Jr.

"Sitting in the back I was just talking with him and said, this is all for you," said Wheaton's mother, Katie Courtney.

He was entering his Junior year.  Sunday night around 10:30 p.m. Wheaton was riding his bicycle in a friend's yard on Archer Avenue.  That's when police said a speeding white Cadillac hit and killed Wheaton.

According to witnesses, the driver was a Hispanic man.  No arrests have been made.

"I wish they would catch him.  I wish they really would catch him.  See what he did.  He took a wonderful person," said Courtney.

Wheaton was Courtney's only son.  Thursday, her family was wrapped in hugs as Jim Hill staff and students recognized their loss.  $700 was collected and given to Courtney.  There was also framed pictures, awards and a promise to keep Tommy's memory alive in the halls of the high school.

"This year our school motto is the power of WhEaton," said Principal Bobby Brown.

"I am surprised," said Courtney.  "Let's me know my son touched a lot of people's hearts.  He really did."
