MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A winner has been declared in the Republican run-off for Madison county sheriff. Tuesday night, Randy Tucker was declared the winner against former Ridgeland Police Chief Jimmy Houston.

Tucker accepted his victory before a crowd of supporters at the Whisper Lake clubhouse.

Tucker has worked in the Madison county sheriffs department for over 11 years.  The last 8 years he's served as chief of the narcotics division.

Late Monday he received a glowing endorsement from Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler.

Tucker says if elected, he plans to return the support given to him by community leaders, and his co-workers.

Tucker says his support base was built on his experience, and pounding the pavement, going door to door, meeting residents.

Tucker will face Democratic challenger Ted Smith in the November 8th general election.
