Here is a press release from the American Red Cross of Mississippi.

Jackson, MS, August 25, 2011 – Hurricane Irene is headed toward the East Coast and the American Red Cross is mobilizing disaster workers and equipment along much of the eastern seaboard to help those in the path of this powerful storm.  A total of thirteen Red Cross workers from Mississippi have been deployed. 

One worker from Natchez is in Richmond, Virginia as Chief of Disaster Health Services.  Her primary responsibility is for general health of the community along with health officials there.  This includes providing medications and first aid to possible storm victims.  Four Red Cross workers from Meridian are driving two emergency response vehicles to Garner, North Carolina.  They'll support the feeding and delivering of supplies in response to the hurricane. 

Dozens of shelters are being prepared all along the East Coast. People can find open Red Cross shelters by viewing an interactive Google map at or by downloading the free Red Cross shelter app for their iPhone from the iTunes store.

It's important that those affected by storms stay in contact with loved ones and the Red Cross Safe and Well website can help them do that. Safe and Well is a secure, easy-to-use online tool to help families connect in an emergency. People can register by visiting the Red Cross web site or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Red Cross chapters from Florida to Virginia are working with local and state officials to prepare for the storm's arrival. People in potential evacuation areas should familiarize themselves with the Red Cross Safe and Well website by visiting so they can let their loved ones know what their situation is due to the hurricane. The site can be also be accessed by going to safeandwell on a smart phone, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. People can also update their Facebook and Twitter status through the Safe and Well site. Affected residents should also download the free Red Cross shelter finder app in the Apple iTunes store.
