Miracle pup raises money for CARA

BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Pet owners and their dogs came out in force to support CARA— a local no kill shelter's "Dog Days of Summer" fundraiser. Now, there's one pooch in particular who stole the day and probably wouldn't be here today if it weren't for a loving community and CARA.

"Everytime I see him I tear up and just I know it was God's work because look at what he's done so far." Thomas Hollingsworth gets emotional talking about Francis, the puppy. Back in February, Hollingsworth found Francis abandoned and in a coma, in a box near his home.

Thinking back to when he found Francis, Hollingsworth says, "we were coming back in and I said it's a puppy and I think he's dead."

Well, Francis now affectionately known as the "miracle pup" certainly isn't dead. This past week the pup won a national contest, pouring in $10,000 for CARA, the shelter that helped nurse him back to life.

On Saturday Francis stole the spotlight once again. He spent the day playfully taking pictures with fans to help raise money during CARA's "Dog Days of Summer" fundraiser.

Harriet Scott adopted Francis in April. Scott says, "it's just amazing to see how people are reacting to him and so happy to see him, he's having fun too."

The 4th annual "Dog Days of Summer" festival is one of CARA's largest fundraisers. Jack Welch, CARA's Vice President says, "it takes about $1,000 a day to run the shelter so the event here will probably bring in about $15,000 to $20,000."

On a daily basis it takes about 3,000 pounds of food to feed the animals at the CARA shelter. Within the first hour or so of the dog days of summer opening up, pounds and pounds of food as well as other supplies were donated, packed into a trailer and then shipped to the shelter.

Hollingsworth says, "these folks at CARA deserve way more than we can give them." Hollingsworth says that from the heart, knowing Francis probably wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for CARA.
