All of you coin collectors--there's a new quarter to add to your collection.
Hundreds of school children and Mississippians came out to the Vicksburg National Military Park to celebrate Mississippi's very own coin. A quarter minted with the U.S.S. Cairo is on the tails side of the new quarter. The U.S.S. Cairo was the first U.S. warship to sink because of a torpedo-like weapon.
The new quarter is the 9th coin produced by the "America the Beautiful Quarter" program. Each year, five coins representing a different state or U.S. territory are put into circulation through the program. Officials from the National Park Service are excited about Vicksburg's new treasure.
Mike Madell, the Superintendent at the Vicksburg National Military Park says, "it's going to be fun because even today when I get change from the grocery store I look and see what's on the back of the quarters and it's going to be really neat to look down and see the Cairo there and tell somebody maybe in New York, that's our park and I was there the day this quarter was released."
Sixty-four million quarters will go into circulation Tuesday.
