Jackson City Council discusses budget

Posted: Updated:

As the city of Jackson looks to finalize a budget, they were asking to hear from capital city residents.  Five council members discussed the budget for the fiscal year 2011-2012 Thursday evening at city hall.

Two residents spoke up at the hearing and gave their opinion on proposed changes to the budget.  The changes include extra money for the Jackson Hinds Library System and raises for city employees making $17,000 dollars a year or less.

"How does that pay on the taxpayers? We are on a fixed income," said Ineva May Pittman, a concerned resident.

"There is a potential of one mill increase.  It doesn't mean we're going to increase it one mill, but if you have to you have to have already done that before you get ready to set the budget. So it doesn't mean we're going to raise it, but it doesn't mean we're not going to raise it," said Jackson City Council President Frank Bluntson.

The city council is expected to adopt a budget Thursday.
