JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson store clerk, employed only two months, has been hospitalized, struggling to survive a violent attack. Dilip Patel, 49, was shot in the head Monday afternoon.

A teenager, Bennie Beals, 16, has been accused of firing the shots. He is behind bars charged with aggravated assault.

At 1:21 Monday afternoon, Jackson police responded to the Shell Sprint Mart at 1141 University Boulevard after witnesses reported gunfire and that someone had been shot.

Jackson police spokesperson, Officer Colendula Green said, "The shooting happened on the parking lot. The clerk walked out arguing with the suspects, which led one of these suspects to fire a round at the clerk, striking him once in the head."

Dilip Patel was rushed to the University Medical Center with what Officer Green described as a life-threatening injury. Four people sped away in a green Volvo, but it wasn't long before Jackson police caught up with them. The car was spotted in a driveway on 713 Winter Street.

Green said, "Officers canvassed the area and they were able to locate these suspects in the 700 block of Winter Street which they were taken into custody; three males and one female where they were being interviewed at police headquarters and there are charges pending."

One of the males was 16-year-old Bennie Beals who was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly pulling the trigger and wounding Patel. So far, Officer Green says no one else has been charged in connection with the incident.

Officer Green says Beals will likely make an initial court appearance on Wednesday. She says Patel remains in critical condition.
