Closed levee concerns residents

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Concerns arise among some Rankin county residents when a levee suddenly closed Monday.

Barricades prevented traffic from traveling on Old Lake Road in the Robinhood Community.

Residents said orange barrels appeared where dirt along the roadway is giving way.

Those living in the area told WLBT that Rankin County officials were at the scene Monday afternoon and examined the crumbling earth.

On the opposite side of the levee, wind driven waves could be seen lapping against the shoreline.

No water had crossed the roadway Monday afternoon.

People living below the levee and nearby are worried that recent rains from Tropical Storm Lee have caused the erosion problem.

"We have some concerns, but you see what they did. They didn't do anything but close the road off and put some cones down for anybody," said Kelsey Harrigill who lives near the levee.

"About a year or so ago the levee had washed out on the other side, and they had repaired it. I guess it's washing out again," said John Gibbs, who travels the levee road almost daily.

Calls to the Rankin County Emergency Operations Center for information on the levee conditions and road closure were not returned.
