Family with disabled daughter waits out flooding in one room

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson family, with a disabled daughter, was forced to seek refuge from rising flood waters in one room of their rental home early Monday morning.

Elsie Echols said water rushed under the doors into her Fontaine Avenue home around 2:30 a.m.

The 39-year-old said about a foot of water entered the house.

Mattresses, clothing and other items were damaged and are drying in the carport.

Residents on Fontaine Avenue said several homes on the street were flooded.

Echols' daughter Serena, 21, has brain damage and was huddled with her seven other children in a back bedroom trying to escape the sudden flooding.

"I have to feed her through a tube, and she is not able to do anything for herself. All her supplies got wet and messed up so I don't have any supplies for her," said Echols.

According to the Jackson mother, she also experienced flash flooding at the house in January.

She is hoping for assistance and said Monday she has not been able to find help or even temporary shelter for her disabled daughter.
