Two Jackson streets are in severe disrepair

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two of Jackson's main street arteries have fallen into serious disrepair which are West Street and Fortification Street in northeast Jackson.

City officials say there are immediate plans to rework both streets.

There are places where north West Street is so bad, you nearly lose control of your vehicle. Fortification Street is almost as bad.

Work is now underway to replace water lines under these streets and they cannot be resurfaced until that is complete.

Roosevelt Williams said, "It's like you are going on a roller coaster. And the poles are so close to the street that if you hit one of those bumps, you are liable to go into one of those poles."

Chris Mims is the city public relations director.  He said, "We will redesign the project to re-bid to replace a water line, as well. Once they design that, we will move forward with our project, we will replace the water line, repave the street and do some sidewalk work as well."

Mims says work could be complete on Fortification Street by the end of the year, but it will be next year for north West Street.
