MDOT steps up timetable for I-55 overlay

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

MDOT is stepping up its timetable for repairs on a section of I-55 in south Jackson.

Officials have decided to perform an emergency overlay between McDowell Road and Byram -- rather than waiting to begin a reconstruction project planned for next year.

Last week, we showed you how heavy rains from Tropical Storm Lee aggravated existing problems with the pavement in that area.  Crews were out patching up numerous potholes.

MDOT plans to award the project on Monday with work to begin soon after.

Engineers expect the overlay work to be completed by November 7th.

90% of the nearly $5 million price tag will be paid for with federal highway funds.
