Nissan to add two new lines to local plant

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Nissan will start building two new lines of vehicles at its Madison County plant in 2012. Production of the Xterra SUV and the Frontier compact pickup truck is being moved to Canton from Smyrna, Tennessee, to make room for the new electric car, the Leaf, there.

Nissan has been making vehicles near Canton since 2003 at its huge plant. Currently the Altima, its number-two selling automobile, is made in Madison County, along with the full-size Titan pickup truck, the Armada SUV, and a new commercial van.

The plant is built in such a way as to easily convert it to new lines. Nissan does not talk publicly about all this, but we were able to get some information from Tim Coursey, executive director of the Madison County Economic Development Authority.

"Every county in this state has been affected by Nissan," Coursey said. "Somebody has been touched by Nissan, somebody knows somebody working at Nissan, or somebody has been touched by Nissan."

Nissan would not comment about the expansion involving the Xterra and Frontier, so we asked Coursey how many new jobs might come with the two new lines.

"We have not had a number validated," he said, but "we are hoping for the 300 number that was thrown out back in April. But we won't hold anybody to that."
