JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson public schools will take on the help of Jackson State University to improve Whitten Middle School's academic standing. Whitten is the only school in the tri-county area to receive failing status in the 2010 accountability rankings.

The Mississippi Department of Education measures school achievement through a quality distribution index or QDI. Whitten's QDI is 97, compared to the state average of 158. Whitten is one of only 11 schools statewide with failing status.

The Jackson Public School District is on academic watch due to the latest round of scores. Superintendent Dr. Jayne Sargent says she has begun meeting with principals to emphasize their role as instructional coach.

Regarding Whitten, Dr. Sargent says, "Whitten middle school will benefit from a collaboration with several departments at Jackson State University, especially in the areas of mathematics and science."
