Man dies in ATV accident

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Another Mississippian loses his life to an ATV accident.

Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington tells us he was notified at 6 p.m. Saturday evening about the wreck at 1034 Stump Ridge Road, that's in the northeast part of the county.

Thirty-year old Vernon Terrel Ryals-Land was killed after sustaining serious injuries to the head and face.

An accident reconstructionist has visited the scene to gather more details into exactly what happened.

It is unclear if Ryals-Land was wearing a helmet. As of July 1, Mississippi state law requires all ATV operators to wear a helmet and to undergo competency training.

The State Department of Health says all terrain vehicles present unique dangers because they can reach high speeds off the road where unpredictable conditions, such as rocks or tree roots can cause crashes.

Riders are advised to choose the proper vehicle for the age of the driver and to take all safety precautions.
